Container fleet disposal: where retired boxes earn most

Container fleet disposal at end of marine life: why inland depots and agricultural markets pay more than port terminals or scrap, and how Contrade sells them.

Container fleet disposal value at the end of a box's marine life depends on timing and on where the box is when it retires.

When containers retire from marine service

At around 10 to 12 years the cost of keeping a container's CSC certification current for international carriage stops making sense, and owners retire the unit from the fleet.

Selling into local scrap is the easy exit and the poorest one. Demand for shells at the wind and water tight grade in domestic markets is steady: storage on sites, offices on projects, modular buildings and farm stores all start with a retired 40ft or 20ft, which is the demand our equipment sourcing desk supplies.

Resale value by location

Sale prices for retired units are not uniform. Positioning an ageing box in a domestic market with demand captures the difference:

  • Inland depot gateways. Land-locked industrial and logistics hubs pay more for a WWT shell than congested port terminals.
  • Agricultural storage markets. Rural hubs that need weatherproof storage for equipment and grain give steady demand for repurposed shells.

How Contrade handles the disposal loop

We inspect, grade and relocate retiring fleets to the inland centres where they sell, and connect the owner with regional buyers. The result is a higher residual value per unit than a scrap sale and a shorter time to cash than a port-side listing.

If you have a fleet approaching retirement, send the unit list through container trading and we reply with a disposal structure.

Tell us the equipment, grade, quantity and lane.

A director replies within one working day with availability and an indicative price.
